New Leadership...
May 25, 2004 marked an historic event here at Word of Life Hungary. Our National Director of 15 years, Eric Murphy, passed the baton to a new leader. Alex Konya has been serving on our staff since 1992 as Academic Dean and Main Bible Teacher of the Bible School. He now assumes the role of Director accompanied by Dave James as Associate Director. Eric Murphy continues to serve as Founding Director.Allow me to introduce you to our new director. Al grew up in a Hungarian-American home in Cleveland, Ohio. His grandparents immigrated from Hungary during WW I. He grew up in a Christian family. He was saved in April of 1970 during evangelistic meetings at his home church. Following this he attended Cedarville College , where he majored in Bible. He met his wife, Pam, there in 1971, and they were married a year later. After finishing his undergraduate studies, Al completed his M.Div. and Th.M at Grace Theological seminary, and did post graduate work at the Institute of Holy Land Studies, Jerusalem, Israel. Before joining the Word of Life Hungary team in 1990, Al spent sixteen years in the pastorate. His church in South Bend, Indiana was very active in Word of Life clubs and events. Our new associate director, Dave James, has served on our staff since December of 1992 as Executive Dean and Bible Teacher of the Bible School. He grew up in Columbus, IN and studied mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He met his wife, Karen, there and they were married the summer after graduation. While working as an engineer, Dave began heading down the wrong path to a destructive lifestyle, and God used a friend to witness to him and eventually lead him to Christ. Within two months Karen also trusted Christ for her salvation as well. In 1985, Dave and Karen both enrolled in the Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, NY. After a 12 week internship in their home church in the summer of 1986 Dave began studying at Dallas Theological Seminary. In the middle of that program a 1-year internship with the Bible Institute, turned into 2½ years of ministry as the Dean of Men. In 1990 he returned to Dallas, and graduated with an M.A. in Biblical Studies in 1991. They arrived in Hungary on December 30, 1992. Please pray for Al Konya and Dave James as they assume the leadership of this ministry. Pray for wisdom and endurance. Please also pray for the staff through this time of transition. |

A Busy Spring... This has been a busy quarter. As the Bible School and Bible Clubs wrapped up the academic year, we held the Counselor and Helper training, the Ladies Conference and Family Day. We had over 100 Hungarian young people attend our Counselor/Helper Training weekend in April. They sat through seminars and practical training for the roles they will play this summer in the camp. Counselors will live with the campers as their caretakers and spiritual counselors each week. Helpers work in the kitchen, dining room and all over the camp. Summer camp could not happen without the service of these young volunteers. This weekend plays a key role in preparing them for service.
Praise the Lord, the Ladies Conference, which Angie again had the honor of coordinated, was filled to capacity. Elisabeth Elliot Gren made what we expect will be her last visit to Hungary to speak at the conference. As she taught and relayed experiences from her fascinating past, over 400 Hungarian ladies listened attentively and were deeply touched. The example of this faithful woman of God continues to be an encouragement to the women of Hungary. Our annual Family Day is the event that kicks-off our summer season with an outreach to the community. We open our gates to all who wish to attend and provide lunch and an evangelical meeting as well as sports and children's activities. This year our speaker and special music guest was Tim Kaufman. He sang beautifully and presented the gospel clearly to the over 800 guests who attended.
All three events resulted in great blessings. Thank you for your prayers for the ministry and please continue to pray for all those who made decisions for Christ at these events. |

Summer Camp begins... Summer camp has just begun and we have about 100 kids attending the first week. Andris is busy directing the camp program. Work teams are here from PA, NY and GA as well as Germany to teach language classes and help with light construction work. Please pray for the staff, ministry teams and especially that God would prepare the hearts of the campers who will attend. |
