Andris
Growing up the second of two children in a small town in Komló, Hungary, the only time I ever really heard about God, Jesus or faith was at Christmas, because in Hungary “Baby Jesus” brings the tree and gifts. When I was old enough, though, my parents informed me that, “The gifts are from us… Jesus is just a fable.”
In 1989 when Communism fell in Hungary, God began working in the life of my whole family so that we found ourselves attending a protestant church. This is where I first heard the gospel and I understood that I needed to make a decision to live with or without Jesus. Although I understood the situation, I decided that I was not yet ready to live with Jesus. However, my family made the right decision and around the same time each of them made decisions to give their lives to the Lord. I noticed God beginning to work distinctively in my family’s life. I really liked the changes that they went through and I started to envy them. There came a time when I encountered a change in their lives, which totally broke me. Finally I saw the big picture, and I was ready to accept the truth of the gospel message, which I already knew and understood. In this way I made that decision which I should have long ago. God began to form me and change me. As the result of that making that decision, I came into contact with the ministry of Word of Life Hungary, where I am serving together with my wife. It is good to know and experience that we have a God who has always been and will always be faithful to us, no matter what happens.

Growing up and attending church with my parents, I learned that God loved me, and I learned how to treat others with love. I tried to be a fairly good person, and I thought that I would probably go to heaven based on that. It wasn't until I was 18 years old, that I truly understood the truth of John 3:16. Through the prayer and faithful witness of friends at a local church, I came to know that God had given His Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for my sins, and that if I accept that truth, He would forgive me and I would spend eternity with Him. I trusted Christ as my savior after a church service in 1989. In May of 1990, I had the opportunity to spend 2 weeks in Hungary helping Word of Life set up for their first summer of camp. After graduating from Penn State in 1993, I was able to return to Hungary for a year to work as their English Correspondence Secretary. I then returned to the U.S. and attended the Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, NY.
The Lord broke my heart for missions, and for the Hungarian people. I am excited to have an opportunity to be involved in the Lord's work. I have been in Hungary as full-time staff since September of 1997. I praise Him for blessing my life in so many ways!
